Vibrant & colourful.
How long have you been an artist and how did you become an artist?
I have been painting now for 12 years. Thanks to the Irish artist Frank Clarke I bought his Simply Painting Book, brushes & paints & taught myself to paint in watercolour.
I did a painting every day. Sometimes I lost track of time.
What is your favorite medium and why?
Watercolour is my favourite media. I just love the effects it can give. Unfortunately due to having Spinal Scoliosis I find it very hard now to do watercolour. I am using watercolour pencils and gel pens which are easier on my spine.
The Green Door (shown above). This was my first outdoor painting. It was a warm summer's day.
I was very pleased with the result when I finished it.
Is there an element of making art that you enjoy the most, and why?
I can lose myself for hours and I find it great therapy.
If you could imagine the “perfect art day” for yourself, what would it be like?
A warm summer's day sitting in a field of poppies listening to the bees humming.
If you could spend 24 hours with one artist, living or historical, who would you want to spend the day with and why? What would the two of you do?
Monet. I love his work. I would love to sit in the Garden in Giverny with him painting the water lilies.
Do you have any tips or advice for aspiring artists?
Congratulations, Mary, on your featured work. Delightful and extraordinary images. Impressive watercolor expression. It looks like you really enjoy what you do.
Mary, loved reading your answers. Your style and colors are beautiful. I find your paintings very comforting which is something I am always drawn to. I've only been painting for 2 months and find watercolors and arylics my medium of choice but have been experimenting with different techniques. I have yet to find out who I am as an artist but will continue to paint and practice and not give up. Thank you for your lovely paintings.
Congratulations Mary for an honor well deserved. I can tell you are passionate about painting. You truly inspire me. Keep up the beautiful work!
Hey, Mary. Sorry I'm getting here a little late. I hope you've been enjoying your week in the limelight. You know I've always been one of your admirers. Most of all, I admire your command of those Irish greens. No one does them the way you do.
Thanks so much, for introducing me to gouache and to the use of salt. I love both, although I don't do them as well as you.
Keep up the good work.
