Critique please, be brave!

Posted on November 1, 2012 at 1:41pm 2 Comments

I keep putting my artwork out there. Sites just like this one. I do this to work on growing as an artist. What I am finding however is that when I put new works up and ask for thoughts or comments, I get replies like: "cute", "nice", "very nice".

While I thank you for those comments, they don't really help me as an artist. I would like, want, need a more thought provoking, (for me) critique. I didn't say criticize, I said critique. Whenever I look at someones art work, and I really…

I will not quit. I will not give up.

I have just finished 8 small acrylic paintings. Two 5x7 and six 5x6. This was my annual leaf series.

Every fall I go out and go leaf hunting. The goal is to create a new fall series that is totally different than last years. It is. I created these in less than 4 days for an event that was on Friday night. I was even sick that whole week and I was still able to produce these 8 works. I…

Feel the fear and do it anyway.

I had a decision to make, either confront the fear, walk through it, work with it or hang it up.

I looked my fear in the eye, got out a sheet of paper and the photograph of my dog Soozie,(who passed away in February.I hadn't been able to do it because of the grief) and began.

I started with the usual 1:1 grid ratio, this one being 8x8". Then instead of subgridding, I trusted my eyes, self and heart and just drew what my eyes saw.

OMG, what a freeing experience! the work…

Love your pet portraits....they appear well painted, composed and have depth to them. Your portraits...other than the officer....don't appear to have depth...that 3 dimensional quality that makes them stand out on a 2 dimensional media (paper/canvas). I believe your use of the grid method helped tremendously. Keep up the good work.

Danette, OMG, your animal art is amazing.  I love the boxers partially  because I have been lucky enough to be the mom to Buster and Sachmo, my two sweet boxer boys.  Your cats are amazing, I have 4.  Just wow!  Beautiful.

Thank you Dannette, I need and feel all the good wishes, energy, prayers that are coming my way.  I have 3 more treatments over the next 6 weeks and then I'm done. I can't wait.

Hi Danette,

Thank you so much for your kind comments, I truly appreciate it.  I am so happy to have you on board, with your positive energy and joyful spirit.  I enjoyed seeing your portrait art - they are full of personality!

My name is Thai - it's pronounced with a silent 'h' - so it's "tuh-nee-yuh".  My mom is Thai. I'm not sure what the name means, but the story goes: my dad was in the Bangkok airport and saw an ad for toothpaste. The model's name was Thaneeya.  He liked it so he asked someone how to spell it, and here I am! :D

Your name is unique as well - you are the first Danette I've ever met!

Best Wishes,

Thanks Danette! I have always had a pretty good imagination (got me in trouble a few times-lol).  I love playing with collage, I guess mainly because it's safe, you can't get it wrong.  Congrats on the upcoming arrival!!!! Do you know what it's going to be? I realized the moment my son and a nurse wheeled Tyler out of the delivery room and we saw him for the first time that I truly did believe in love at first sight.  I love my boys (have 2) but there's nothing in the world like grandchildren.
