Hi everyone... thanks for visiting!
My name is Michael Beckett and I have been living in Calgary, Alberta Canada for 13 years now.
I consider myself a reluctant artist, as I have never had any formal training, but I always have had a love for the creative process. I probably would have pursued a career in art, but I am partially red/green color blind ... so that idea was parked for about 25 years!
About 10 years ago, I picked up a copy of the book ''Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain' by Betty Edwards... and got hooked and have been involved in art ever since!
After enjoying the good old fashioned pencil for a while, I reluctantly decided to try painting. It was painful at first, but despite the color vision handicap, I found I could do it! Painting in acrylics is my first love now, but I also enjoy my drawing 'roots' by going to life drawing sessions every week. I also enjoy drawing with conte crayon and charcoal.
I consider myself a hobbyist, but I have sold a few pieces to help pay for some art supplies... and I would dearly love to develop my skills enough to make art a small business in retirement (only 10 years away... yikes!)
My work tends to be somewhere between realism and impressionism. I never really like to repeat myself so you will see a lot of different subject matter, although there are a few tendencies. I tend to do a lot of still lifes, and I love portraits and figures. I've been tackling landscapes lately, mainly to figure out how to manage my color vision deficiency when reds/greens are dominant colors. My goal is to paint everything at least once ... lol!
