Developing a work of art into something I love

Posted on May 4, 2014 at 6:38pm 4 Comments

Here is one of the paintings I've been working on developing for a few weeks now. I wanted to keep the light playful feeling that I was trying to capture when I first spilled the watercolor out across the page in an art class where I was demonstrating watercolor painting techniques.

I absolutely love what happened when I added the black sharpie. It's the first time I applied this free-form painting style to such a large piece. It was a little overwhelming at first, and now I am so…

In the act of being creative we come up with all kinds of ways to give life to the ideas rattling around inside of us. Sometimes we have the time to fully develop and explore an idea when it springs out and wiggles around on the page in front of us. And sometimes we do not have the gift of time to develop these ideas.

I used to get frustrated by this, which would often lead to trying to finish something and rushing and ruining the…

Keeping the art I'm developing in front of me

Posted on April 19, 2014 at 1:37pm 3 Comments

If your life is anything like mine, you have multiple demands on your time. In my case there's a new job, an aging mom I'm caring for, and art classes to teach and prepare for. It can feel impossible to find time to create art and this is the challenge: Find ways to put art in your life in simple daily ways!

So this is one way I do this: I place the art work I am in the process of developing in different spots in my home where I will "bump" into them as I go about living my crazy busy…

My Story

After a lifetime of thinking that I had to shave off pieces of myself to ‘fit in’, I quit my job, started my own business, and learned about listening to that not so still, not so small voice inside.

One of the first things I did was create a deck of 64 collaged cards filled with lots of ideas designed to trigger your intuitive imagination and get you moving down the path to following your dreams. I call them enrichuals, simple things you can do to enrich your daily life.

This was over 15 years ago! Since this big leap, I have reinvented my idea of work to include art making, teaching art and design, as well as doing design, copywriting, and social media work for major corporations, small businesses and individual clients.

My personal transformation into seeing myself as an artist began with a journal and some big ideas. I was 14 years old, a time in life when I needed permission to get art supplies I couldn't carry home in my backpack. I asked for a sheet of plywood and a bucket of glue. I wanted to make a collage. A REALLY BIG collage. To my amazement, two days later my 6' by 8' canvas arrived. I collaged my heart out for six months….dreaming, exploring, ranting….being a teenager.

I have never looked back. My dream is to be a part of a community of creative pioneers who have lots of ideas for how to live dazzling, rich lives bursting with crazy fresh ways to have a life chock-full of meaning.

Today I enjoy working in many mediums, including colored pencil, watercolor, acrylic, fabric, jewelry, collage and polymer clay. I am a graphic designer by trade and also work as professional creativity coach.

Tell me what you think! Share things you’ve tried that I haven’t thought of. Help us grow this community of folks looking for ways to bring all of their gifts to the table.Tell me about what happened when you listened to the voice inside that told you to pick up a paint brush, or start a garden, or try a new medium, or take on a creative challenge, or…………

My wish for you is that the Art Colony helps you to listen to your inner yearnings and do some exploring of our own. Scroll through. See what’s waiting for you! Tell me about what is happening in your crazy, busy, complicated, creative life! I would love to know.

I am officially back as Penelope Joy.  I am more comfortable now to accept the moniker of "artist."  I am not totally sure what to do on this site, but I will step in, slowly at first until I know the ropes.

Your artwork/collage work is just fantastic! I can't pick a favorite really. I have always admired collage work and do this a lot with my own children and now grandchildren. I feel it lets you express a whole lot more of yourself without a lot of "fuss" if you know what I mean. You have taken it to a new level though. I love this site...so many ideas and wonderful artists!
