No, not a naughty post but a work in progress of three horses.  I took this shot back in the spring and since it's a 16 x 20 (my largest CP piece), it's taken me all summer to get it done which…READ MORE

Well, I have not yet completed my Christmas mailbox piece as I used a supposedly workable fixative to touch up some areas that were already saturated with color.  The fixative did not work and it…READ MORE

Hello Terry     I am loving your pencil work and I have just recently moved from graphite to colour pencil myself.  I am amazed that you can work on vellum without going through the paper. I am guessing that you select the right colour first up and don't need to do many many layers to achieve the 'right' look. I think I have a pretty light hand but I usually end up needing something like canvas paper. Any thoughts?????

Hi Terry, sorry it's taken me ages to reply, but I'm finding the response to my artwork overwhelming and I'm having a hard time replying to everyone.

Thanks for your feedback to my question about white pencils. It appears that we both use similar techniques when working on a white background, where I try to avoid using the white pencil at all. If the white background isn't enough, I'll always use gauche as I find that white pencil just doesn't cut it. I've been trying to use white pencil on a black background for years, but I found that it would never give me a bold enough white.......until recently. I was about to attempt to use white ink on a black background as a highlight (as in my Apache pic), and I'd opted to use mount board. As I was laying down the outline with white pencil, I found that the mount board took the pencil very well, so I carried on with pencil instead of ink. I've tried many brands of pencil over the years, and the Caran d'Ache Supracolor pencil seems to give the best results........although it's still not perfect.  :o)

P.S. I've been giving your artwork a longer look, and I'm liking it very much. I especially like your botanical pics.......quite superb.

Hi Terry........brain picking time.  :o)

In your experience, which brand of white pencil do you find best, ie; good bold coverage, with the least amount of balling?

Hi Terry, maybe you have already answered this somewhere else but I haven't seen it so I apologize if it is already there, but...... what kind of pencils do you use? The pictures in your gallery are amazing. Many look like they have a watercolor background. Do you mix watercolor with pencils and if so, which paper or support would you use? thanks!

Ok, that makes sense! Mind if I ask what brand you prefer?
