Hi everyone, I'm new here, and also new to the world of art. I am teaching myself how to draw and paint (it is slow-going!). I've tried acrylics and watercolor, and so far I like acrylics the best.

Is there a group here for newbies like me? (And is it okay for me to be part of this Art Colony if I'm only a "wanna be" artist?)

Thanks so much for your input and insights!

i second the motion...er, question... i'm also trying to learn sketching with watercolors and doodling with pens by myself. slow going but looks like it will be a nice journey. :-)
I, as well, am a newbie to this! I don't have much experience but I love the Art Colony!!!

First of all...newbies are absolutely, positively, without a doubt welcome at The Art Colony so never, ever question whether you belong here!  I'm looking in to the possibility of starting a group for beginners, but in the meantime, please don't hesitate to post your work and ask your questions in the forums.  : )

Hi Maureen! I've been taking drawing classes for the last several months, and have learned so much...but I'm eager to get back to "putting paint to paper!" I'm not a trained painter, either, but feel like this is a great site to learn from others who are in the same boat with me.

Glad to see you. I hope you will find some good encouragement here. What have you been working on?

I'm new too and love being involved in the Art Colony. I find it inspiring and supportive.  I tried today to use soft pastels to draw a volcano from memory. It got very muddied in colour. So then I decided I would experiment with water on the pastels. It is amazing how if efffects.  The outcome ended up a muddy abstract.. Are there any ideas on how stop getting a muddied artwork.  Pauline

Yes, newbies are definitely welcome here!  I echo everything that Donna said so wonderfully: "Newbies are absolutely, positively, without a doubt welcome at The Art Colony so never, ever question whether you belong here!"

For all newbies, please do ask questions and post your art because we're all here to help each other learn and grow and share this fun art adventure.  Even professional artists started out as newbies at one point... even the "Old Masters" had to learn to draw and paint for the first time at some point in their lives!  You can look at a painting and think "Wow!" and not realize that it took the artist 20 or 40 years to learn to paint like that. So we all start off somewhere... at the beginning.  :)

Hopefully soon we will have a group for newbies, so we'll post again soon about that.

Have a great weekend everyone! :)

I consider myself a beginner as well. Although I started painting about 10 years ago, with raising two boys and working full time I have had very little time to paint so I probably really only have a couple of years experience. I like to paint seneries, but I am having a hard time deciding where to put the focus of the painting. I seem to want to put detail in everything. When I do decide to put the main focus on a moutain or something in the background It is very hard for me to fade out the detailing as I get to the forground.I am working on an eagle in fllight now and I am stuck with what to do with the forground. Any ideas.
