I want to start using colored pens in my art journaling and mixed media work. I'd love to know what brands you recommend. I'm thinking art journaling types that work well on paint and layers, etc. Also tech pen brands would be helpful. I'm thinking colored and white as well.

i am still searching for the perfect pens to do this very thing as well. i have scoured art journalist's blogs and videos and have tried many of the pens they suggest or use themselves without much success. i really think you have to lay down some mod podge or gel medium over your painting and THEN try writing with the pens/markers once dry. i have found white-out correction pens to be pretty good at writing over paint (for a white line) once you get a good flow of "ink" started. sharpie paint pens are the same way. i know this didnt help much but maybe it will give you some ideas..

Thanks for sharing your experience, Shari. I have also heard that white out pens are great for white. I purchased a set of fine line Prismacolor Markers and they're ok for writing in my written journal but not so great with working on layered stuff. I think I need a bigger sized tip. These are .005 size. I can do stipple work with them tho, but even the dots are VERY small.

Thanks for the tips!

I love the Montana fine tip paint pens. They are filled with acrylic paint and work great over/under all kinds of different mediums. If you want a super fine line like micron pens they wouldn't fit. I only have black right now but getting more colors is high on my list! I just got a new white pen by craft smart (sold at Michaels) I personally like it better than my bic white out pen. Good luck!

ive never heard of Montana pens. definitely looking them up next! :*) i have a couple of the white craft smart pens and i never could get a real opaque flow of color from them. maybe they were duds, or i just need to shake them up longer. they are definitely less expensive as compared to the sharpie paint pens. i got some Permapaque pens and they are awesome. nice, opaque color has written over just about all ive tried them on, including glass, metal, etc. Made for non-porous surfaces but i used them on a fabric painting project and they were great.

Thanks, Renea and Shari, for your pen tips!
