Very good question Darlene, I would like to know too.

This has happened to me a lot and here are some tips I've learned a long the way to keep the bristles in shape for as long as possible (for acrylics or watercolors - oils may be different):

  • Try not to get paint up near the ferrule (the silver part that attaches the brush to the bristles). When you get paint up there, particularly acrylics, it can cause the bristles to change shape, even if you clean it in a timely manner. Therefore try to keep the paint on the mid-to-end of the bristles.
  • Never leave the paintbrush with the bristle-side down in a jar of water, even for a few minutes, as that can cause the bristles to change shape.
  • Always clean the brush right away after use and don't let the paint harden (particularly acrylics).
  • Use cool water to wash your brushes - hot or warm water can cause the bristles to spread or fall out.
  • When you clean it, gently rub soap into the bristles and squeeze it out starting from the ferrule and moving towards the tip.
  • Gently reshape the bristles after you wash it, while it's still wet, using your fingers to mold the bristles into shape.
  • Store the paintbrushes either flat or vertically with the bristles facing up, never with the bristles facing down.

Hope this helps! If anyone else has tips to share, please do! I tend to buy cheap brushes so when the bristles start to flare out I just buy a new one. :)
