My initial art journey started and ended at school, I hated art lessons and in fact on open day all my so called art was hidden from view.

Later on in life I lived in St Ives, Cornwall, which has a very large art community. I personally knew a lot of the local artists but never had any desire to pursue art in any form. Looking back, what a missed opportunity.

I moved to Australia in 1974 and in 2004 at the age of 65 was nearing retirement so I was looking for a hobby other than fishing, watching sport and music. I decided to try picture framing, just for my own use, so started downloading pictures from the internet to frame and hang on the wall. I then thought, why download the pictures, why not produce your own.

My first inspiration was Frank Clarke on TV. I know Frank specialises in water colour but I went out and bought some brushes and some oil paints. I only painted one oil painting and did not like all the associated smells. I switched to Acrylics but didn’t like them as they dried too quickly. Next was watercolour. I really enjoyed this medium and used them for several years. I eventually got fed up with using wet mediums and switched once more. This time to Pastels. Inspired by our fellow member Colin Bradley I started using pastel pencils. I really enjoyed pastels but eventually the dust became a chore having to clean up so much. Coloured pencils are now my preferred medium but I have found that they are probably the hardest of all to use successfully. I have been using them for 3 or 4 years and am still on a learning curve. Faber Castell are my first choice but I have a small range of Prisma and Derwent as well. By the way, I sign my works on the back as I don’t believe in intruding on a piece of art by writing on the front.

I have been on several different art site over the years and am grateful to all of them for the experiences. Being on The Art Colony has been a great experience as there are so many diverse artists aboard and although I don’t use a lot of the mediums I am always interested in seeing other peoples works. I will never badly criticise anyone’s work as I believe we all do the best we can at that particular moment. I deem it a great honour to be invited to contribute to the Member's Showcase.

I thank you all for all your gracious and meaningful comments and look forward to your continued support and encouragement.
