Hi everyone. This is my current work in process. I have recently returned to my art after nearly 40 years.  I'm self taught and would love advice on making pieces look more smooth. Is it my paper that I'm using or do I have to layer and blend more. It is more blended and smooth looking in real life but I just wanted to get a softer look. I used Strathmore 400 series drawing paper and Graphite pencils.

Thank you!

I don't have the knowledge to help but I just wanted to say this is a lovely piece!

Hi Melinda! When I want to soften my own drawings, I use a fan brush for very little softening. I usually use a small demo piece like an ear or his side tufts of fur to check how much to brush and how much pressure to apply. I also use a great big blush brush ( make up) for large pieces cuz they're so soft and work so well. These brushes May work for you too. Good luck, Patti Romo.

hi , this is beautiful!

i just bought a tub of 'self-levelling gel" for my mixed media projects. it is 'ideal for smooth glazes'.

i don't know if it would work well over graphite but it is worth mentioning i think. good luck.
