How would you describe your art?

Mostly western themed. I do draw/paint other animals, landscapes and some portraits.

How long have you been an artist and how did you become an artist?

I’ve always been creative, since... as long as I can remember, in one form or another. I remember when I was about 5 years old. My mom had got me a little table and I would sit at it and draw pictures of ponies LOL. Growing up, I was always doing some drawing/painting, quilting, or knitting. I don’t think I became an artist, I think I was born one.

What is your favorite medium and why?

Pastels in sticks and pencils form. They are versatile, forgivable, and blendable. I really love the end results with them also.

Pick one work of art from your Art Colony portfolio and tell us the story behind it. Why does this piece have meaning to you? What steps did you take to create the piece?

Willow (the black and white paint horse shown above). This horse belonged to a friend’s daughter, Cassidy. They moved to another state and had to sell their horses. When Christine asked me to paint this, I stressed a little about it - I wanted to do an awesome job so Cassidy could always have something to remember Willow by. I am very, very happy with the outcome and so was Cassidy!

To create Willow, I worked as I do on (almost) piece. She sent me a photo, I sketched out a rough sketch, refined it, the onto the fun part... applying color! After I am finished, I walk away for a day or two and look at it again, do any touch ups that are needed.

Tell us about one medium, technique or style that you would like to try working with (that you have not tried before) and why you would like to try this.

Oil painting!!! I love the end results!! But I am not sure that I would have the patience for the drying time.

How do you make time for art?

I no longer work outside the home so I have most mornings free and some evenings. So, (usually) time is not a problem for me.

If you could imagine the “perfect art day” for yourself, what would it be like?

Hmmm, that’s easy. Trail riding with good friends and ending the day with a camp fire.

If you could spend 24 hours with one artist, living or historical, who would you want to spend the day with and why? What would the two of you do?

Oh my, there are just too many to pick one!! But, Norman Rockwell would be one. His work is iconic!

What would we do? Sit on a porch, painting and talking. I bet he was full of stories.

Do you have any tips or advice for aspiring artists?

Practice!! Do NOT listen to any negativity about your art! Do what your heart tells you, if you want to

paint purple horses, then paint purple horses! And practice!

Congratulations, Jane!  All your art is wonderful, but I especially adore your horses -- because of my love for them!  Your painting of the fisherman brought a rush of tears -- looks just like my DH on the shore of the American River.  He is in Heaven now, but oh, how he loved to fish!  Enjoy your week ~ you deserve the honor! ♥
