How would you describe your art?

I describe my art as being fanciful, joyous, unique, detailed and always with a dash of whimsy. So I guess the term is Whimsical Art.

How long have you been an artist?

As long as I can remember so that would be when I was a kid in grade school. My interests always gravitated toward the artsy crafty things.

What is your favorite medium and why?

My favorite medium is by far pen and pencil only because I can complete an art piece in a relatively short amount of time whereas adding colors take time to do and I am a very impatient artist... LOL. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t like color, its just more time consuming and I want instant gratification.

What are some of the challenges in working in your preferred medium?

Well, I can’t really say I've faced any challenges working in pen and/or pencil. I am very comfortable with these tools. As long as I have a clear idea of what I want for a new art piece, I have no problem executing it. Everything will just flow.

How did you learn to draw/paint? (self-taught, school, lessons, etc)

Basically I am self taught. I have never taken any formal training or attended any art schools but learned to improve my artistic skills over time by studying and gathering techniques and bits and pieces from other artists then incorporating them into my works and developing them into my style.

Who or what has influenced your art?

I have always had an interest in fashions so I love the artwork of Erte and Antonio. At one point, I did fashion illustrations for our local newspaper and so admired the works of one of our local fashion illustrators Richard Vyse. Later on, I fell in love with the early pin up girls of the early 40's and 50's so Alberto Vargas and Olivia were my all time favorites. Lately my works have been inspired by whimsy and charm so Mary Engelbreit is a favorite of mine. And surprisingly I came across many wonderful whimsical artists right here on The Art Colony. I am captivated and inspired by the works of Judyth Nelson, Kim Wilkowich, Christina McClintock, Maureen, Lucy Peach, Mary Lee Parker and a whole bunch more..

What inspires you?

Hmmm what inspires me? Well most of what I draw comes from my head, my own fertile imagination.  But I have to give credit to the works of other artists. I love looking at other people's works and gain inspiration from them.

How do you make time for art?

Being single, I have all the time in the world so when the mood hits, I go with it. But since joining up with The Art Colony, I try to engage in drawing on a daily basis.

What is your favorite subject matter and why?

That's easy...PEOPLE. But anything I draw nowadays has to have a tad or a whole bunch of whimsy included.

What's the best art advice anyone has ever given you?

Develop your own (distinct) style.

Do you have any tips or advice for your fellow artists?

Be yourself. Develop your own style. Continue to learn and improve in your artistic skills. Keep the passion going. Love what you’re doing. Share your artistic talents. Don’t expect everyone to love your works. Accept criticism with grace.
