How would you describe your art?

I think my art is whimsical children's art.

How long have you been an artist?

I've been drawing as long as I can remember and at 55 that's a lot of remembering!  One of my earliest  memories  is of my mother giving me an old paper shade to draw on.  I was so tickled.  I think I drew on every square inch of that shade.

What is your favorite medium and why?

I would have to say watercolor is my favorite medium.  I love that I can have soft muted colors or bright and wild colors.

What are some of the challenges of working in your preferred medium?

I find watercolor to be "unpredictable."  That may be 'cause I haven't had any formal art training but, that is also my favorite thing about them.

How did you learn to draw / paint?

I am a self taught artist. For years I would buy every art book and supply that I could afford thinking that "those things" are what make you an artist but what really makes you an artist is just drawing or painting with whatever you have at hand.

Who or what has influenced your art?

Probably my mother, she was a very creative and talented woman and I always wanted to be like her.  In the last decade I would have to say that the children that I work with have influenced me a great deal.

What inspires you?

Nature, children, other artists both the well known and not so well known.  Truthfully, it's kinda hard to pin down precisely what inspires me.

How do you make time for art?

It's not that hard for me to make time for art because art makes me happy.   I just do it whenever and where ever I can.  Plus, I always carry some art supplies with me.

What is your favorite subject matter and why?

I love to draw 'trees.'  Of course my trees talk, play musical instruments, babysit....and whatever else I can dream up.  And I like to draw children doing silly, funny things.

What is the best art advice anyone has ever given you?

To "not believe a thing that my inner art critic tells me."

Do you have any tips or advice for your fellow artists?

Just do it!  So what if someone doesn't like your art.  If you do, that is really all that matters.

Love the girl in the pink shorts and broken crockery! The way her one toe points in shows she's complicit, I think--as much as she'll blame the cat!

Tracy I've really enjoyed reading your interview & as you already know I love your art it always makes me smile !!                Lyn x

Nice interview Tracy!! Im in love with your dragons...just love 'em

My children's book "Six Stitches and a Week" (now out of print) was illustrated by Renee Cuthbertson who has a very similar style to yours. The book was silly poems I wrote for my kids when they were little about all the naughty things they did! The girl in the pink shorts reminded me so much of Renee's drawings. I found a used copy on line, but I don't think you can see the resemblances well from the small photo. Click to enlarge and then you can see.
