Is there such a thing as non-objective art? I am no art historian but I understand that Picasso said no to this question. I am a beginning painter but I think art can be non-objective. But who I am I disagree with Picasso?! The painting displayed here seems to have simply fallen onto the wooden gessoed box. I hope you enjoy it.

Hi James....I consider myself a non-object abstract artist and have for many years. I do not put any objects in my paintings. I really have not even looked to see if that "title" is valid and I guess I have not cared about that. Didn't know that Picasso said not to this but hey every thing changes with time.  Love your painting. I have some of mine on my page if you would like to check them out.  Have a good day and Happy New Year!!

Hi James,

A wonderful question. I would say that Art can be non objective, and often is so. This is of course my opinion and it may well differ from the opinion of others including Picasso. I of course respect Picasso\s opinion as much as anyones and their right to think and feel differently to myself.

One of the wonders of Art for me is that at it's heart it is all about and maybe only about opinion and the various personal feelings we each treasure so dearly. Indeed this particular point is one of the longest standing discussions relating to Art as we know it. It is the difference of opinion that gives diversity and the open playing field for true creative expression, without our differences what would life be worth.

Two things come to mind:  1. the question: How can a subject be an object?  If true, then all self portraits are non-objective art, and, 2. The easier conclusion that If one isn´t looking at an object while painting, say it comes from an image in the mind, then one is doing non-objective art.  I think Andrea Santee would agree to this and say all abstract art is non-objective.... but some look like objects.  Then I remember watching water patterns form and thinking it was abstract process art... which is non-objective, right?  Who knows as long as it touches the person or the person´s heart in some way.

This is an example, I think, of non-objective or process art   393.%20Avalanche%20Mardi%20Gras%20Series%2013%20ink%20acrylic%20was...
