Hate to sound stupid but what gesso do? How does it work?

Thank you Annette! And by the way, it is perfectly ok that you posted your journal with the rings here. This is the perfect place to post it. I love what you did!

I so agree Suzanne and Amanda, love it that there are no rules at all, these best of two worlds .

Bottom line, there are no rules. Follow your heart. Do whatever inspires you!  I use a wide variety of journals and probably just as many techniques to fill my journals. Go crazy! Have fun. Most of all, do what you want to do with this! ; >

There are as many ways to create or have a support for your art journal as there are people on the earth. You can even use a discarded book- or a simple sketchbook purchased at Walmart, if you treat the pages with gesso first. That's why Art Journals are becoming one of the biggest trends in the art/ craft world. :D

Mary M. Here is the second journal I made like with the rings.  Hope it is ok that I put on here, if not I will go to the back of the classroom.

I just used ribbon/lace instead of the rings on this one.  xo

Love the ideas! Thank you. Will be fun to come up with an idea!

The first one I did was with the rings you get at the office supply, used some chipboard from the back of a watercolor tablet and then some heavy "scratch board paper with gesso on it.  I was good to go and then decorated the outside of the journal.  i thought I was in high cotton then.   Worked for several journals.   Then I got a little fancier and did a coptic , I think it is called where you sew it and put beads ets on it and lace.   Have fun Mary Margaret Hickman.   xoxo

Thank you. Will start my own. Would like to experiment with different materials.

Yes what Amanda said.  When I first started doing this fun adventure, I thought the same thing, think I have been doing it almsot 2 years, I think.  Anyway I figured that out, play to your little heart's content, experiment with different ways of doing art products and no rules.  Express yourself and you will develop a style , it will just come out by it's self.  There is my two cents worth Mary.  The journal can be purchased or hand made, I just make mine as I go and your personal art will  come thru.
