Hello and Welcome to the Beginners Group!

This is the place or beginners to gather and ask questions, seek feedback, and share their thoughts and experiences. Experienced artists willing to provide encouragement and share what they know are also welcome here.

If you are a beginner and would like to share your art, you can either post in the Show & Tell thread or start your own discussion.

If you are a beginner and would like some advice on a specific work-in-progress, you can either post in the WIP thread or start your own discussion.

Experienced Artists--please don't share your artwork in this group unless you are using it to answer a beginner's question.

Click here to learn how to upload images into your forum posts (which is important so that people can see your art within the post, rather than as an attachment link beneath your post).

Just two simple rules:

  • Please keep all discussions relevant to beginner topics.
  • Be friendly and considerate in your posts.

Thanks for joining & have fun!

Hi everyone, Im new the site and generally to art. Im sort of just doing what I like which is mostly throwing colours together in an abstract way.

What Id like advice on is about preparing shop bought 'canvas's' to paint on. I say 'canvas' but its more like some type of plastic stretched over a wooden frame like a canvas would be. The sort of wall art you get from Ikea with a big colourful printed image on! Do you need a specific kind of primer to make sure the paint or gesso will stick to the surface?

Any advice would be very much appreciated thanks

Can anyone please let me know what’s the best way of cleaning buffing stumps.

Hi Suz, I think what you experience is natural - we have a 'handedness' that makes working left-handed or right-handed elements more natural to us and small differences that arise as a result show up clearly to our unforgiving eyes. One way to address this (for symmetry in drawing) is to very lightly graph out the paper and work on balancing smaller sections, left and right, then erase the graph lines afterwards.

Some people have natural drawing skills that compensate for this, or acquire them through practice - but I am only a year or so at this and my drawing skills haven't improved much LOL.

There is nothing wrong in moving paper or board around.

Regards, Allan

I love all animals and I love cartoons. This is one of my little ferrets at the Rainbow Bridge.

Like I said, I am no art expert, but I can say I think your Emu is really good. You have the makings. You will get all sorts of teaching on this site and keep adding artwork, all of  you.

My art i call expressionism.  I like to think of it being art therapy.  I usually find inspiration from the dark places and paint to either expell negativity or paint positively more often than not.  It helps me recover.:)x
