This is my second portrait in oils. Skin tones are a challenge and I am open to comments/suggestions.

beautiful work!

I love this, its so soft i thought it could have been in pastels instead of oil

I like the colors on the lady though the man looks a bit too pink.

maybe add some sepia or a touch of grey for the man. it has been a long time since I did portrature.

Hi Merrie, this is very nice! It is so much better than mine!

My personal thought is that the lady's skin looks a bit too purple-I am not sure if you did it intentionally, because from the painting it looks like she felt cold.

Hi Merrie. It is a beautiful painting, which I think should have pleased the couple. If you can greyscale this painting then you'll see straight away where your problems are. You've been struggling with skin colours, when in fact it is the tonal values which are all important. You could begin with the background, making it dark from the right side getting lighter to the left. If you could get a ref photo with good lighting that is a great help. I do appreciate there are times when we have to use what is given. I like to take my reference photos in daylight indoors, next to a window.

It's a lovely portrait!  I actually like all of the colors in the skin tones on both people but I agree that it might be good for you to convert this to grayscale and see what's happening in terms of lights and darks.  Not just on this painting, though - I do it randomly on pieces of mine just to see what kind of integrity the paintings have tonally.  I really get a good sense of this couple from your painting.
