Hello and Welcome to the Beginners Group!

This is the place or beginners to gather and ask questions, seek feedback, and share their thoughts and experiences. Experienced artists willing to provide encouragement and share what they know are also welcome here.

If you are a beginner and would like to share your art, you can either post in the Show & Tell thread or start your own discussion.

If you are a beginner and would like some advice on a specific work-in-progress, you can either post in the WIP thread or start your own discussion.

Experienced Artists--please don't share your artwork in this group unless you are using it to answer a beginner's question.

Click here to learn how to upload images into your forum posts (which is important so that people can see your art within the post, rather than as an attachment link beneath your post).

Just two simple rules:

  • Please keep all discussions relevant to beginner topics.
  • Be friendly and considerate in your posts.

Thanks for joining & have fun!

started out with a scrap of white cardboard with this - not expecting I'd get this far. From a photo taken of young emu through fence on emu-raising-farm in the Warrumbungles, inland N.S.W.

Hello and welcome to all the newcomers. I'm a crafter, not an artist. I'm the only one I've been able to find on this site. So, I am not here to help you with your already new found or experienced talent.

But I will tell you, you will meet the most wonderful people on this site and make friends like never before. There are so many of us that are friends and would love to have you all as friends. It is an amazing thing.  At least in my life it is.

You will learn from the greatest and will be amazed at the artists on here. You'd think they would be in galleries. The diversity and creativity is beyond your imagination. Have fun with us!

I'm new here in The Art Colony and I consider myself as a beginner in Drawing. I wish to learn more and improve my skills in drawing and sketching. I'm just a school aged girl. Nice meeting you, guys! :)

Not much of a visual artist here. I write better than I draw, really. But I'm trying to improve. I've been keeping fairly abstract lately just to get used to the media I've chosen. Most currently I am attempt to blend (or layer) colored pencils. I started with really poor results but I feel like I'm finally starting to catch on.

Anyhow, I look forward to improving and maybe even becoming a decent artist.   :D

Hello, I'm new to drawing have just discovered I love watercolour drawing. I get the impression that it is more about the blending & washing colours than the detail of the picture. Leaving it up to the viewers imagination so to say. What do other more experienced people say? Any tips? Many thanks, K

Hello - I am new to this forum and also very new to painting. I have been procrastinating for almost a year and recently put a DVD tutorial I had purchased into the computer and away I went. I was amazed at how quickly I could turn a blank sheet of canvas into something that to my eye resembled a rather rustic Australian Landscape. I am now onto my 2nd painting on the same theme by incorporating additional items such as clouds and Aussie gum trees. Once I figure out how to upload the painting I will post it and will also welcome your comments and advice as to where I can go from here. I am still a bit of a coward and experimenting with shading and blending using only 2 colours - burnt umber and white. Hopefully I will soon have the confidence to move to more colours .... baby steps .....
