Composite Realism

Here's a gallery of my artwork that I have termed "Composite Realism" because they combine two different styles: realism and abstraction.

I really like the words and the art together! It feels like a journal entry coming out of hiding!

Thanks, Suzanne.  I like the idea that it feels like a journal entry coming out of hiding!

Thaneeya, did you use the same technique as mentioned in your mixed media tutorial for the animals??

Thanks, Tracy!

Suzanne, I used a different technique with the animals in this portfolio. Some are acrylic paintings and others are colored pencil drawings, so the techniques I used were pertinent to those mediums.

do you create the backgrounds first & layer the animals on top or create the backgrounds around them?

Hi Tracy, It depends. For the colored pencil pieces, the backgrounds and animals are drawn in more or less at the same time, next to each other, as opposed to one on top of the other.  For the acrylic pieces, I usually do the backgrounds first and then the animals on top, although there are some exceptions if I change my mind about the background after already painting in the animal (like the sheep surrounded by text).  But for the most part, I do paint the animal on top of the background.
