A lot to do.. and a few new tryouts

Posted on June 10, 2013 at 4:53pm 6 Comments

I have been busy over the past few weeks... a couple of commissions to get started on.. One already in progress, a timber wolf.. (Check the Work in progress forum).

I am also venturing into a bit of unknown territory... airbrushing on ground aluminium panels... an artist collegue of mine does them and they are awesome..so I am going to give it a go...

Her name is Denise Stephenson and this is her and one of her art pieces.....…

About me

Posted on May 26, 2013 at 3:14pm 0 Comments

I live in Cowra, New South Wales, Australia. A small town in a rural region of the state.

I have been doing artwork of some kind for most of my life. I have, basically, tried every type of art....contantly looking for the medium I really liked. Drawing has always been the foundation of all of my art. I evenually started doing a lot of oil paintings and loved the medium. As a sideline hobby/art, I took up doing leatherwork in the 1970's. I did a lot of pictorial leather art carvings…

I'm inspired by the art I've seen here on your page. Your work is exceptional. I am still trying to teach myself to use an airbrush well. My biggest hurdle is having the time to practice and experiment. I still use traditional brushes when my lack of airbrushing skill lets me down. Looking at what you have posted here makes me believe it is worth every effort to practice and improve.

Thanks Dallas,

TJW

Hi, Dallas.  I still have a lot of the inferior quality paints around and don't want to dispose of them. Despite the quality,  that paint is still costly should they be dumped? Or would it be wise to mix some of the student grade acrylics with the professional grades?

How do you transfer a drawing to the canvas after preparing the surface?

I am presently searching for smooth painting surfaces. I don't trust those hardboard surfaces sold at the local hardware stores as they may be chemically treated. Can the mattboards used in picture framing be also used as a painting support? Even if they can be successfully primed, how archival are they? The only other alternative would be to order online, which can be a bit costly for me. Looking foreward to your reply. Thanks in advance.

Greetings Dallas,

You mentioned to use Distilled water. Do you think using R/O Reverse Osmosis used for salt water fish tanks will work as well?

I forgot to mention the paint brands I use are Rowney's: 'System 3' and 'Cryla'. Winsor&Newton's: 'Galeria' and 'Finity' 'System 3' and 'Galeria' are most likely the inferior student grade paints.

Thanks for your comment regarding my problem.  I understood the part about certain colours becoming dull and not to use tap water. However you didn't seem to finish your last statement which is a little confusing. I would also like to know if there is any other water I can use to thin the paint? Or do I have to just depend entirely on acrylic medium to do so? I also want to comment on your beautiful work, which has excellent detail especially those two Zebras! Goodbye.
