All the pastel work I am posting is from a few years ago, I gave up pastels for coloured pencils. I found white pastel pencils to be fairly soft but all the rest I would class as medium.

The main advantage over the sticks is that there is not so much powdery residue and your fingers don't get covered in the powder.as the pencils are all encased in wood.  They are not easy to sharpen, the core breaks quite easily in a sharpener. The best thing to use is a single edge razor blade. I have a few pastel sticks still which I sometimes use for backgrounds.
