My name is Melanie.  I am a self-taught artist living in the Midwestern U.S.  I've been drawing almost 35 years (since I was four years old.  Now you know my age, alas...).  My drawing style is varied, ranging from realism to whimsical.  Lately, I've been focused on the realism and pursuing a personal project to draw key figures pertaining to the American Civil War and the Abolitionist Movement of the time.  I've taken a short break from that and recently finished two fantasy pieces.

Some of my favourite things to do are:

drawing/painting (duh!)

Biblical studies/apologetics

reading (if I can stay awake)

writing stories and poetry (if I can stay awake)

watching classic movies (again, if I can stay awake)

sleeping (narcoleptic, hence the problem staying awake)

thinking deep thoughts and learning new things

I have been married to my husband for 17 years.  Chris readily points out problems in my drawings that I might not have noticed.  Every artist has the problem where if we look at our own work for too long we sometimes don't notice when something doesn't look right.  Chris is very good at helping with that.

We only have a cat but she is our child anyway.  Her name is Mouse and she's my fuzzy alarm clock.  Most of the time she thinks I want to get up at 3:30 a.m.

Getting back to art, my preferred mediums are graphite pencil and watercolour.  Sometimes I use charcoal but it's too messy for me.  I don't aspire to be a fine artist or anything great.  I create for the sake of creation.  It's a God-given thing and it drives me to create.

The same holds true for writing but I don't do a lot of it.  The urge to write hits me at whiles and when it does it's usually very strong.  I'll add links to my stories and poetry once I have a chance to add the links here.

Thanks for dropping in and Cheerio!

To read or not to read, that is the question.

So, since my last blog (of 18 October), I've not started on a single drawing.  I haven't even touched a drawing that hasn't been finished.  And why?

Oh, these blasted digital books! The convenience of carrying hundreds of heavy, large classic paper books on a tiny device weighing less than a pound.  After devouring Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, Emma and now Sense and Sensibility I've quite lost my interest in drawing.  I love old…

Lately, I've been interested in revisiting my Civil War project. A guy in my office mentioned the new Daniel Day-Lewis movie to me, simply entitled "Lincoln" and suggested that maybe I could get a wider audience interested in my work after the premier of the movie. My husband is crazy about history and really wants to see this. So do I.

That being said, I poked around on the web, looking for new subject ideas. I landed on Johnny Clem, the "little drummer boy of Chickamauga" he was… READ MORE

Thanks Larry. Now go away.

I was recently visited by my old friend, Larry.  When Larry comes for a visit I get a lot of sympathetic "aww"'s from people.  I turned 39 the other day and wouldn't you know it, he decided to visit the day before my birthday.  So, I missed work for two days and sat bored on the couch whilst he continually reminded me of his presence.  When Larry visits, I just feel terrible.  He knows I don't like him, but he parks for a week or two anyway.  He usually shows up mostly in the colder months,…

On to what now?

Since I've finished the scratch board project I've been wondering what to draw or paint next.  The past two years have definitely been the most busy for me creative-wise than I think I've ever spent.  Not only have I been drawing and painting more, I've also been busy with a work-related project as well.  About a year, the law firm that I work for has implemented a client service-oriented program.  In this program, the employees are divided into teams and each team tries to outdo each other…
