Is It OK To Copy?

I find that I can produce a result I am happy with as long as I am copying someone else's painting or illustration.  Is this normal for beginners?  Is copying a normal step in the learning process?…READ MORE

About Me

I am new to the world of art, but have always been a creative spirit.  I love all kinds of creative activities and dabble in many artistic pursuits such as painting, collage, papier mache, photography, sewing, gardening, and cooking.  In short, I love any activity that calls upon my artistic, creative side.  My dream is to be able to one day help support my family with my art. But, for now, I am just trying to learn as much as I can and enjoy the journey.  I know that I have a lot to learn, and I welcome all comments and critiques.  Joining the Art Colony is an important step in realizing my dream!  It makes me feel like a real artist!

Every Expression Has Value

"There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action;  and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.  If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost.  The world will not have it.  You must keep that channel open.  It is not for you to determine how good it is, nor how valuable.  Nor how it compares with other expressions.  It is for you to keep it yours. clearly and…

What Would You Do If You Weren't Afraid?

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 4:29pm 8 Comments

I recently saw an episode of Oprah's Lifeclass in which she shared that this question is posted on the wall at the headquarters of Facebook.  It really got me thinking.  How about you?  What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Would you break out that big canvas you bought yourself but haven't had the courage to paint on yet?

Would you approach your local cafe's and galleries about displaying some of your work?

Would you organize an art show of one, and just set yourself…

Letting Go of Expectations

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 7:47pm 5 Comments

A dear friend  (our own dear Meg) recently shared a concept with me that has really stuck in my heart and mind and is changing my life.  So, I thought I would share it with you in hopes that it would help you as it has me.  She said that our unhappiness with things in our life does not result from what those things are, but from what we want them to be.  In other words, it's not how something turns out that is the cause of our disappointment, but rather our expectations of how we wanted it…

Have you ever heard that "life begins at 40"?  Well, I'm a believer.  I recently turned 40 and I have to tell you that I have experienced a profound change in the past year.  All my life, as far back as I can remember, I have wanted to be an artist.  I remember winning an art contest in the 6th grade.  I won with a picture of the Egyptian queen, Nefertiti, that I drew and colored with crayons.  But my well-meaning parents soon squelched any artistic aspirations I may have had in favor of…

Thank you for your lovely comment :) I'm so thankful for art and music and creativity in general in my life. It has kept me sane when it felt like everything else was in chaos. It's wonderful to hear about others finding healing through art as well. :)

Thank you for the comment on my illustrated haiku. I really love your art, especially your seahorse. I've also been one to always enjoy creative activities, but I never pursued art because I felt I wasn't good enough. About six years ago, I taught myself how to paint using tutorials and painting shows to learn the basics. I've had 2 solo art shows since then and participated in several group shows. That really helped boost my confidence. The truth is.. I was an artist all along, and your art shows that you are too.
