I find that I can produce a result I am happy with as long as I am copying someone else's painting or illustration. Is this normal for beginners? Is copying a normal step in the learning process?…READ MORE
Hello, Friends. I am a beginner, and I need some advice on how to paint text. I tried it the other day and it was a miserable failure. I was using black acrylic paint and a small liner brush.…READ MORE
Can you recommend some good books for those of us who are teaching ourselves art? I have no access to art lessons or even a good library, so I am going to build one of my own. Today I ordered…READ MORE
I am new to the world of art, but have always been a creative spirit. I love all kinds of creative activities and dabble in many artistic pursuits such as painting, collage, papier mache, photography, sewing, gardening, and cooking. In short, I love any activity that calls upon my artistic, creative side. My dream is to be able to one day help support my family with my art. But, for now, I am just trying to learn as much as I can and enjoy the journey. I know that I have a lot to learn, and I welcome all comments and critiques. Joining the Art Colony is an important step in realizing my dream! It makes me feel like a real artist!

It is not for you to determine how good it is, nor how valuable. Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is for you to keep it yours. clearly and…READ MORE

Would you break out that big canvas you bought yourself but haven't had the courage to paint on yet?
Would you approach your local cafe's and galleries about displaying some of your work?
Would you organize an art show of one, and just set yourself…READ MORE
A dear friend (our own dear Meg) recently shared a concept with me that has really stuck in my heart and mind and is changing my life. So, I thought I would share it with you in hopes that it would help you as it has me. She said that our unhappiness with things in our life does not result from what those things are, but from what we want them to be. In other words, it's not how something turns out that is the cause of our disappointment, but rather our expectations of how we wanted it…READ MORE
Have you ever heard that "life begins at 40"? Well, I'm a believer. I recently turned 40 and I have to tell you that I have experienced a profound change in the past year. All my life, as far back as I can remember, I have wanted to be an artist. I remember winning an art contest in the 6th grade. I won with a picture of the Egyptian queen, Nefertiti, that I drew and colored with crayons. But my well-meaning parents soon squelched any artistic aspirations I may have had in favor of…READ MORE
