protecting pastel paintings

I was wondering if there is any kind of portfolio or case to carry pastel paintings in.  I need something to carry the paintings in to take to classes or traveling.  I don't like the way that fixatives darken the pastels and prefer not to use them.  I would also like to know if there is some kind of clear spacers to put between my paintings and the glass of the frame to keep the pastel from smudging.  Thanks.

My Art Interview!

Tommorow I have an interview, a person wants to do a documentary about young artists! And out of all the people at my school my art teacher chose me!!! <3 I am so happy and nervous, and I don't even know what to wear! Huff. I just had to get that out. I am super shy, and I have to be in front of a camera and everything!

Framed or not?

Hi, I do a lot of painting on gallery wrapped canvases, because they don't have to be framed for most art shows.  But what I am noticing is that almost everyone else's paintings are framed, and so then my work looks kind of unfinished surrounded by them.  But, I really can't afford to frame these larger paintings!  In fact, I can't afford to frame at all, which is why I didn't even think about painting for a long time.  Now I'm addicted, but I have this issue!  I have noticed that the larger…

Watercolor and colored pencils

Hi everyone,

I am learning to combine watercolor and colored pencil.  Is anyone else doing artwork that combines those two?

Glad I found this site!  Saw some great work and decided to join.  I've been drawing and more recently painting for a short time, started drawing fall 2011 and painting this past January.

A big  inspiration for art was my Grandmother.  While battling cancer she took up oil painting to take her mind off things. She did some amazing stuff and when I was about 10 we painted a landscape together.  That was the last time I produced anything besides doodling on paper.

Happy to…

I have been gainfully unemployed for a little over two weeks and can't even express my excitement every morning that I don't have to go sit in a cubicle all day.  Days like today I'm especially happy because my kids (6 & 10) are out of school and I don't have to hire a babysitter or send them to my parents' house, even though my mom and dad already called yesterday and asked the kids if they want them to come and get them today...lol.  I'm really glad I found The Art Colony.  It gave me…

Weekend Lab #1

I just came across a picture that I took when I visited a friend in New York last year.  Its a picture of a tree with a somewhat muted building in the background (I did a close up shot of the tree).  The tree in the picture seems relatively easy, so I'm going to attempt to recreate it.  Just bought my turpentine, and I'm going to experiment with it as a blending agent with my oil pastels.  I'm really not sure how oil pastels should look, but I like the effect of it even the little bleed that…
