I applied for the illustration job, got some more information on it and the more I read, the more I feel this REALLY isn't a good fit for me. It's frustrating because it's a very, very nice opportunity and I truly hate letting it pass me by.
I'm at war with myself over it. I know if it doesn't fit me, it doesn't fit me. I can't do anything about that. At the same time, I'm a starting artist, I should take opportunities when they arrive whether I like them or not.
So I haven't…READ MORE
I like this method of working, it produces random effects which can look very effective. I read about the method in a mag article and decided to give it a go, it works so I would like to share it with others.
I use watercolor paper, gouache paint and black ink. first create your painting using the gouache paint. paint all parts that need to be coloured including painting all white parts white - anything not covered with paint will end up black.
Leave the completed painting to…READ MORE
I am always trying out new ways of drawing. I love zentangles and also use a drawing program called Scribbler Too. I'll be putting up some of my work in these mediums in the next few days. I would love to try water color painting, so am open to tips/help in this medium.
Happy weekend all!
Since I've finished the scratch board project I've been wondering what to draw or paint next. The past two years have definitely been the most busy for me creative-wise than I think I've ever spent. Not only have I been drawing and painting more, I've also been busy with a work-related project as well. About a year, the law firm that I work for has implemented a client service-oriented program. In this program, the employees are divided into teams and each team tries to outdo each other…READ MORE
Thank you all for the wonderful welcome! I'm not a professional drawer, but love it anyway. I write both stories , articles for children, and love drawing pictures for my stories. Very happy to have found place to share them. I am looking forward to learning more about drawing, hope to learn to use some new mediums in future.
Had to share because it was so cute. I went yesterday to purchase supplies for my upcoming Basic Drawing class that starts Aug 29th (IM SO EXCITED). Anywho, i was in the store and for the life of me i couldnt figure out what size paper the teacher requested we get (of course i picked the wrong size) so, im standing there pondering over my supplies in my cart and this little girl comes up (id say 5-6yrs old) and she said " what school do you go to, i want those kind of supplies" so i smiled…READ MORE
The past two weeks have been absolutely insane - quite the roller-coaster. Two out of three of my pieces were finalists in a juried show and have been on display in a very public area since the beginning of August.
But just this last weekend, I've been having little panic attacks, specifically at night when I am exhausted and it's so quiet I can finally hear myself think. The doubts have been hitting me hard. Can I REALLY make a living as an artist? I haven't sold any paintings and I…READ MORE
Well, my first scratchboard (scratchboard paper actually) in 21 years is of Lee van Cleef, the sharp-featured mongrel in several "spaghetti westerns" of the 60's and 70's. The subject isn't so much of a challenge. Being about six years into teaching myself to draw people, I'm finding it ever easier to get things proportional or to get the drawing to look like the subject. The problem is the dern scratchboard. I'm just not proficient at it, seeing as how I'm lacking the practice. I'm not…READ MORE
I feel as though I am in a void when it comes to a style. So I have decided to take three of my strongest skill sets and merge them into a style. I believe this is the way to go since I am sure I would love whatever I create with this so called 'Style de Shelly'. I am working on a beautiful piece which was commissioned and I am going to add aspects of the three styles in it.
My home work is to now focus on that style........whatever I choose to paint MUST show elements of the…READ MORE

While away this Summer, I’ve missed blogging! New blog writers may think “blogging” is done for “the audience”. I am finding that it’s also a fantastic way to connect with myself.
Lyle and I will be leaving for home on Monday. We’ve had a great time in Rapid City, but I am ready to get back home. So daily blogging will be a really great treat for me, in a week or so!
I’ve painted a lot while in visiting in South Dakota this Summer. You…READ MORE

I remember sitting in my kitchen what feels like a lifetime ago, watching Jerry Yarnell on our old television, paint a breathtaking landscape lit up dramatically by a lightening storm. I remember the half hour show always whizzed by and I longed to see more. With every brushstroke, I remember thinking, "I wish I could paint like that...."
Recently unless I check TAC constantly, I miss so many posts, including some by artists I have been following since I joined. We were a much smaller number then and a once a day check revealed everything I wanted to see and read. Now, new artists are being added at a dizzying speed--most of them incredible. They add their what's-ups, blogs and comments to an already busy board and alakazam! those posts just zoom by before I get a chance to imbibe! Because I still work full-time and must…READ MORE
