Mail Art

I just recently discovered Mail Art…and you guessed it, I just had to try out!  It`s a lot of fun.  But what is Mail Art? In a nutshell, it`s a postcard sized piece of art that you send in the mail

to someone.  I did a lot of research and attended a workshop before creating all of these masterpieces that follow.  But this is what I retained as the most important: Anything goes!

Here are some ideas to get you started. …

2nd Hand Book Sale.. sometimes they are the best...

Hi there,

went to a second hand book sale yesterday.  went searching for any sort of art books just to see what they had.

Came away with a learn to sketch book and ways of doing it.  I don't have enough time to teach myself.  I dont even know if i am able to sketch. Plus what colours to put on your noses, lips eye's etc... colours i guess...  one day i will get this sort of thing right.  that is the most important thing of portraits.....

So how do you get inspired when there's no inspiration to be had.... Do you bash your head against a wall, read, sit quietly and contemplate or maybe go for a long walk, these are the age old things you come up against when hit "the mental block", what I find really helps me is I look at loads of images of art, then go for a long walk with my dogs whilst listening to music on my iPod.... From queen to pink floyd, hawk wind to Vivaldi it ca trigger something inside that brings forth the art.....… READ MORE

To everything there is a Season...

Sometimes while I am dabbling in my bright colors of Summer and Spring  on my palette of paints, I find it hard to remember that there are other colors to consider. I get so caught up in the colors I have become comfortable with. I understand too well how they move on the canvas and how they mix with one another and their comfort has alienated me from the rest of the spectrum.

Now I know that may sound silly to some, but for me it's a stretch to incorporate browns, tans and rusts into…

muse and inspiraition

What is your muse, or inspiration?

The other day I was in my art room supposedly drawing (I’ve got a few projects on the go), when my girlfriend came down to ask if I wanted another drink (which she often does), but instead of drawing I was playing with the cats “there you go, distracted again!” I say “They are not distractions, they are my muse” I came to our defence.

We both laughed as Clarence just walked head on into the side of my table.

“ Well, at least they are my…

Drawing Inspiration from Nature

I took a trip to one of my favorite places last weekend hoping to get the chance to capture some of the fields before harvest. I lucked out! The weather was perfect for snapping nice clear shots and I even had the opportunity to do some sketching on…

Just getting around to things....

I've just posted some of my favorite pieces; I welcome everyone to check them out, and please-- I also welcome feedback. These are certainly older works, and I've spent a lot of time exploring plants and animals as subject matter. I soon plan to share some examples of what I am currently working on with you all; I have since transitioned into a more abstract form of expression, though I still love working in acrylics. I look forward to sharing more with this Art Colony in the very near…

I followed Ann Marie's lead!!

Last month I submitted my paintings to a art gallery for a solo show, which will not open until next year, waiting for an answer on that show and I, just this morning, submitted 3 paintings to another art exhibition that will be opening in November. It really is OK if they do not make the cut, just the fact that I submitted them is a really big step for me. I, like Ann Marie, never thought or even imagined I would get to this place as an artist but so glad that I have!!

A Different Kind of Medium/Art

Recently we (hubby & I) made the decision to move.  Just prior to making the decision I had begun a project which I have been diligently attempting to complete prior to our move.  I love to crochet and had made some snowflakes for our Christmas tree last year.  I had several people ask if I sold them?  Since it was mid December I decided to wait until this year to attempt to make and sell any.

Last month I began choosing patterns I liked and started to crochet &…

Have you ever heard that "life begins at 40"?  Well, I'm a believer.  I recently turned 40 and I have to tell you that I have experienced a profound change in the past year.  All my life, as far back as I can remember, I have wanted to be an artist.  I remember winning an art contest in the 6th grade.  I won with a picture of the Egyptian queen, Nefertiti, that I drew and colored with crayons.  But my well-meaning parents soon squelched any artistic aspirations I may have had in favor of…

Does anyone keep an art journal?

If so, what type of things do you include to help with your art projects?

Does anyone else have a problem with being a perfectionest?

I seem to have a problem with this and getting anything started.  I keep telling myself it is only paper, or I can paint over what I don't like.  It doesn't seem to work.  I am fairly new at painting so having this attitude is silly I know.  I just need to find a way to get past it.  I need motivation....Maggie

The Magic of Making Art

It’s been a while since I gave myself permission to take the time to make some art. I’ve been busy. Really busy. The amount of time I spend at my “day” job, the one I work to pay the bills, often eclipses the 60-hour mark. And then there are the creative jobs…

More fun than one should with one's clothes on!

That's what painting is for me: fun with a capital "F". It's going back to my childhood, back to the days of new crayons in my Christmas stocking, it's sharp coloured pencils for back to school, it's that new pristine box of watercolours. When I'm painting and some detail gets added, I sometimes find myself actually laughing with glee. It doesn't matter to me that I'm not Leonardo da Vinci. Creation gives me pleasure. And I'm a hedonist!

For Arts Sake!

I suppose the hardest thing to do as a parent is to send your child to out from the nest. Whether it is school, jobs or just out the front door to ride their bike for the first time to a neighbors house...your heart feels like it is walking outside your an artist, sometimes the hardest thing to do is sending your creation or your Art out into the world to stand on it's own.

Oftentimes, it's beauty or it's worth will be judged or determined by those that come in the form of…

Scheduling Art Time

I'd love to know how people schedule time for art in their day.  There are always so many things going on

in my life, it's sometimes difficult to get that nice, long, block of time to do nothing but create art....
