Shabby Chic Art

Now, there isn't really such a thing yet as Shabby Chic Art, but being the explorer I am, I love to make-up new styles.  I just did a Google search for it, and the term sort of exist, but the only thing that all the pictures have in common is that romantic, soft, pastel hues look!  So, I'm still going to own it!  I've been on a painting break for a while, but a few months back, in august, I had to make some paintings for an exposition, in which, among other artist of my region, I was…

Learning about brushes

I am still confused abut the types of brushes available. I have bristle, sable, artificial, and cheapies. I haven't figured out the proper use of any of them. I've just been trying them all and eliminating the ones that don't seem to make sense in the affect I am trying to achieve.

Can someone give me guidance on the type, shape, size and costs for brushes when working with acrylics?

I have some queries..

There are certain things not clear to me even after going through the guidelines on uploading my art work. It would be nice if someone can advise me on the following:

1. Sketches and painting entirely done by me from the scratch, but were inspired by works of others posted in any public domain by certain people. I never try to copy but improvise, follow certain style or composition, color scheme or concept. Can I post them here?

2. Can I post my works which…

fellow artists

I was telling an artist today I am never quite happy with my work. this is what her father told her."The moment you feel satisfied with your art and think you are great is the moment you cease being a real artist."
I just needed to share that.

To read or not to read, that is the question.

So, since my last blog (of 18 October), I've not started on a single drawing.  I haven't even touched a drawing that hasn't been finished.  And why?

Oh, these blasted digital books! The convenience of carrying hundreds of heavy, large classic paper books on a tiny device weighing less than a pound.  After devouring Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, Emma and now Sense and Sensibility I've quite lost my interest in drawing.  I love old…

I will be 78 soon and all of this is way above my knowledge

I will be 78 soon and all of this is way above my knowledge. I don't know how to send a photo of my self or my painting(s). I work in oils, mainly. I have tried acrylic, watercolor, pastels, and colored pencils. Can someone explain what I have to do?, Thank you.

Have I been here too long?

I just realized that when I see a new blog post or update or painting post, I know whose painting or post it is, not because I can read the name (which I can't if I haven't got my specs on!) but because I recognize the picture. "Oh, there's Ruth", I think, or "Sharon posted something" or "I wonder what Suzanne has to say?" I think I may have been here too long! Or.....I spend way too much time on here.

Hello people!

I am trying to build my art business, and I've noticed (and discussed with people) that a good way to establish a mailing list/client base, is to offer giveaways and competitions. It's a relatively inexpensive way of marketing yourself.

So in that vein, I am offering a competition to win a print of my latest work. Go to my blog site

or my facebook page…

The crazy incident of my first Exhibition entry

Yesterday I submitted my paintings for the annual show of lalit Kala Akademy, a govt run art institution here in India. Actually for the first time I wasn't really apprehended by the stuff piled there by other artists. There were a huge load of stuff though, submitted by all kind of artists; sculptors, painters, photographers etc. It was great being there even when all the stuff was lying around still wrapped in bubble paper. The funniest part was my meeting with this one chap who was there…

Four Days with Cecile Baird

A few weeks ago, I participated in a 4-day workshop given by Cecile Baird, one of my very favorite colored pencil artists.  Not only is Cecile an amazing artist, she is also genuine, generous, and downright nice!  I learned so much from her, and maybe even more important than that, I came away energized and excited, with all sorts of ideas for future projects.  I rediscovered all of the things I love about working with colored pencil, like the ease with which I can create fine details and…

Smooth out color pencil stokes!

I always thought color pencils looked awfully scrawny so I thought I could use a white colored pencil and go over it again. It works!

Tug of war with studio time

The studio is calling today. Does anyone else have this battle? Maybe you have carved out time in your schedule, or maybe it has just worked out where you have a few hours to spend as you'd like. You've had some ideas for new artwork floating around in your head, and would like to get a new piece started or would just love to play around with some new supplies. Then the resistance sets in. It's the perfect opportunity, yet the dishes begin to call, you notice a dusty corner, a pile of…
