Hello there. It has been awhile since I last posted a blog, though I've continued to paint all along. I tried my hand at oil painting for the first time, about six weeks ago, I was not thrilled. The painting turned out ok, but I was not prepared for the smell of the paints and thinners, (even the odorless kind) and cleaning the brushes was a constant pain in the butt . Then when I finally finished it, I was astounded to learn how long it took my painting to dry.
With acrylics it…READ MORE
Hello again. I have a lot to be thankful for. As you may know. I recently had a Vitrectomy in my right eye to repair a macular hole. I had lost most of the sight in left eye about 15 years ago due to a macular hole ,that even with surgery, could not be repaired,
I am happy to report that the hole was repaired, and I shouldn't lose any more of my sight. However, I do not see nearly as well as I did when I started painting last January.
But I am truly thankful for saving…READ MORE
Hello again, It's October the 8th and it has been a month since I last submitted a blog. As some of you may know, I have been legally blind in my left eye for the last fourteen years, due to a Macular hole. I tried surgery to repair it, but it did not work.
Last January at the ripe old age of 73, I decided to try my hand at art and began to do a few pictures here and there, I started with a few watercolors, because that's what I'd been given by my eldest son for Christmas. Then my…READ MORE
Well here is is the 8th of September and I am definitely ready for fall. All my important medical tests are over and I got good results, but for the last week or two my eyesight has definitely taken a turn for the worse. I have a torn retina in my left eye which leaves me almost blind in that eye . My right eye is developing cataracts again, so I'll have to be going to a specialist soon. Nobody want's to go blind, but to a late blooming, aspiring artist it's a real…READ MORE
Haven't posted anything for awhile. I've been having totally unexpected health issues that have thrown me for a loop. But after seeing a specialist last week, I am heartened that he doesn't think it's as serious as was first reported.
The first thing I did when I got home was get out my paint and begin a picture.I haven't touched a brush in a month and I was afraid if I didn't start again, I would lose interest.
I started with something that I considered simple, but it was…READ MORE
Well, here we are. Easter has come and gone and some days I feel as if I'm taking one step forward and two steps back with my artwork.
I met a lady at an Easter dinner who had been told by someone present, that I was a artist.I chuckled modestly and said I didn't know if I would really qualify as an artist or not.
She said she had been painting for about twenty years and was still paying for weekly lessons. She asked to see some of my work. I hesitantly showed a few pieces…READ MORE
Well, beware the Ides of March. Spring is almost upon us. I've been painting steadily since the first of the year and have gotten pretty good feedback on my efforts.
I've watched what seems like a million painting tutorials, and for the most part, they have been pretty helpful. and best of all, nobody has told me to quit painting. So. I consider that a definite plus.
That's actually not a really telling statement, because everyone on The Art Colony is always so supportive and…READ MORE

My winter woes have turned into winter whoas! I started the year off with a bang, declaring that I wanted to try my hand at art. Well, I have. I painted about 17 or 18 pictures in as many days. And I must say , it has been fun and certainly educational. Most of my little pictures have been well received by kith and kin, though I know most are somewhat prejudiced by the fact that they love me and don't want to hurt my feelings. And many of my peers on The Art Colony site have been most…READ MORE
I have "painted " about fifteen pictures since I started about a month ago. I've mostly been dabbling in pastels and watercolors so far, just trying to find my niche.
I always feel odd saying "painted". about the pastels I've done, because they're chalk. not paint. But I guess that's the novice in me, showing.
My brother and his wife came to visit from Padre Island last weekend. He is quite an accomplished artist and has placed highly in many art competitions, and I value his…READ MORE
I have been at this trying to learn about different kinds of art for about a month.I sketched a little when I was a girl, a million years ago, but never seriously., and never with anything more than a piece of typing paper and a Number 2 pencil.
So here I am at almost 74 trying to teach myself by watching online videos and a using a few meager art supplies I got for Christmas. I'm propped up on my kitchen table trying to make an effort.
The response of my friends and family…READ MORE
