Feeling Stuck? Play Your Way to a Better Place!

When I’m feeling stuck, I look for ways to give myself permission to play. Think of this blog post as a  kind of “get out of jail free card"! Scroll through until you find something that feels like a lot of fun and do it. Don't wait. Just do it!

How to add a little more play to a crazy busy life.

Get a big box of crayons. Color on the walls. Do one silly thing you loved when you were a kid. Make a friendship bracelet and give it to a friend. Make a list of all of your favorite things and enjoy one a day, like vitamins. Make microwave s'moresHave a dance party in your living room. Visit an amusement park. Color on the sidewalk with chalk.Make home made gifts. Plant flowers. Talk to dogs. Watch cartoons. Send a letter to santa claus. Collect rocks. Bounce off the walls. Say hello to everyone you see. Blow magic bubbles. Paint your face. Make a mess. Marvel over nature. Cut out fun shapes and glue them on a piece of cardboard. Make bean mosaics. Pretend you are seeing for the first time. Walk backwards. Skip down the sidewalk. Wear outrageous outfits. Go barefoot. Roll in the grass. Learn how to turn a cartwheel. Touch everything. Write nonsense poems. Play with dolls.  Read kid’s books. Laugh out loud. Sew patches on your jeans. Listen to crickets. Invite someone twenty years younger to play. Paint with your fingers. Wear rings on your toes.  Go waterskiing for the first time in years. Make mud pies. Look for fairies. Splash in puddlesSing “puff the magic dragon". Get dirty. Imagine you are five. Chase butterflies. Listen to trees. Explore shapes in the clouds. Swim in a wild river. Make someone smile. Tell a joke. Watch the stars come out. Make a wish. Sleep under the moon on a fluffy blanket. Notice everything. Play 'Captain May I'. Pretend you are an explorer visiting our planet for the first time. Spin in circles with your arms out and be an airplane. Hand an imaginary glass of water to a friend. Tell someone a secret. Kiss a cat. Imagine you are royalty. Go on a treasure hunt. Have a lemonade stand. Touch a snake. Watch a spider weave a web. Listen to a waterfall. Ask too many questions. Play a piano. Bob for apples. Build forts. Chew on a piece of green grass. Make faces. Eat dessert first. Take adventure walks. Get caught playing, it sets a good example!

What would you add to this list?

Play with Play-doh.  Buy some of that bubble solution and blow bubbles, it's really fun!  Cut pictures out of old magazines and make a collage - without thinking about a theme or anything - just cut out any picture you see that you like and stick it on there!

Absolutely Starr! Play-doh, bubbles and "intuitive" collage are perfect for creative play!

Great list of ideas, Suzanne! :)

I would add - Do at least 1 thing each day that you have never done before. It can be a big thing or a small thing, it doesn't matter!

My grandson loves super heroes and soldiers -- one weekend, I bought a package of soldiers -- we built a small fort out of cardboard and paper -- added interior items like cannons, etc. -- great fun -- I think we did more laughing than anything -- he loved my paper cannons --BOOM !!!

This sounds like so much fun Jeff! Laughter is the sure indicator of a successful play date. I loved building forts too. You have brought back some fond memories!
