Hiya Mary.......thanks for the compliment, but I'm not amazing really. :o)
Catching someone's likeness is always a challenge, no matter what medium you choose.......even more of a challenge if you're using pastels. When I do a pastel people portrait, I first try to capture their essence using a graphite pencil and then take it from there. If you use Pastelmat, then I've found that drawing with a hard graphite pencil works best, as it's a little easier to erase than soft graphite. Although as you've probably already found out, it's impossible to completely erase anything from Pastelmat.
thank you for the comment on my deer... I thinks I really like portraits on animals and humans... oh deer started as just a deer, but a face appeared in the sky.... I really love how you do fur,,, I think with pastels mostly? I really have difficulty with fur.... I can't seem to abandon using water... watercolor and ink and water... then pastel... so I use blocks of watercolor paper... I really like the paper textured.... I look at what you do and think about trying actual pastel paper.... do you think the pastel paper is important for getting the fur right? as I write this your art is scrolling above... the light, the fur and reflection.. I really admire your ability
