Dee Dee, Thank you for your wonderful comments on my work!  I wish I could give you tips on working with acrylics & watercolor, but I don't usually work in those mediums--I'm working right now in art markers (Copic Ciao brand), colored pencils, & pastel pencils.  Be happy to give you any info on those that I have.  Meanwhile, your work looks very good to me!

Dee Dee, you and I have such similar experiences! I have been on a very similar journey, working on pulling away from being too literal and trying to render everything so realistically. I have been taking various abstract classes and working with instructors who have helped me to just embrace the freedom of the experience - seriously, without an end subject in mind, I approach the canvas ready to enjoy seeing the colors appear, take whatever shape they are going to take, even the feeling of the paint in the brush and on the canvas. I use the music I am playing to influence my mood, and I love seeing the end result. I would encourage you to go to the canvas with no subject in mind, and just respond to your emotions - if you need to use music, or work outside, or anywhere that influences your emotions, and then just let the paint go. What I have found is that its been like sculpting for me - the last piece I posted, of the  mountains - those mountains appeared after laying several layers of different colors on the canvas, and then pulling through them with a palette knife. I saw the side of a mountain, and kept going. It was just that organic. That is the way I hope and pray to continue working, and that is the process I encourage you to try. Just paint through your feelings and forget a subject or a goal. As a start, it may bring you to the release and freedom you are looking for. I hope this was a little helpful. Please keep in touch with me! And thank you for asking me about my process!
