A little art every day improves ones 'creative fitness'

I had the realisation today that I achieve far more by doing a little art every day than I ever did by having the big artwork marathons that I used to cram into weekends.…

Yesterday I delivered my entry documentation for an embroidery and creative fibres exhibition that is to be held in New Plymouth, my nearest city, in a community gallery October. The information that was asked for in invitations was the work’s…

Where does inspiration come from?

Yesterday I saw the cutest thing: two young girls on the path outside my house, battling with an umbrella that was turning contortions in the strong spring winds, and giggling like…

Becoming brave

Posted on September 11, 2011 at 6:10pm 2 Comments

It's so exciting that many of the Art Colony members who haven't exhibited before or sold work are becoming brave after receiving encouragement or inspiration from other Art Colonists.

I thought that this was worth sharing: My 12…

About Me

If I'm not doing something creative, I'm reading about creative things, thinking about creating stuff or sleeping while stuff sets or dries. I remember pulling myself up to draw at my child-sized blackboard before I could walk. As a child, I didn't go anywhere without a pencil and paper. Friends and family members all became subjects of my childish caricatures. Most of them had piggy snouts, because from a child’s perspective the nostrils were all I could see of their noses.

I have always created things—little models, stitched items, gum-nut dolls, etc. And I have sold little art items for as long as I can remember—often for a dollar or so, simply so that I could afford to make more.

I failed art at school one year, which showed me that school art had little to do with creative passion. Once I got over the shock, I reacquainted myself with my love affair with art and all things creative.

I have been sketching and painting for many years. One of my favourite things to paint is light—on landscapes, faces, in skies, sunsets…anywhere! I love learning about and experimenting with different techniques. I also embroider, make art dolls, make mosaics and turn my hand to whatever creative pursuit attracts me.

I feel blessed to be forging an occupation out of my creative interests, and I am very grateful to my wonderful husband for having the confidence to let me run wild with it. I work as a freelance book illustrator (all types of books, from public policy to poetry to children’s stories), and I undertake other parts of the pre-publishing process (including editing, book lay-up, and ghostwriting).  I also take commissions (paintings, embroideries, etc), and sell my art and hand made items at exhibitions and markets.

I would love to visit Antarctica one day, but haven't got there yet—I can't decide which art supplies to pack.
